We were entertained by Stephen (Past President and Youth Director) describing the highlights of his recent trip to Darwin and Katherine.
The sights of Darwin included the unique sunsets and military museums, the cultural challenges faced by the locals, and the wonderful scene of a multitude of "Oldies" and younger dancers taking to the floor in a large square dancing get together. The colourful attire of both men and women, combined with the enthusiasm of the dancers as they changed partners and kept up a frenetic pace appeared exhausting to us watching on, but they were all smiling.
The local "salties" grabbing chicken carcases seemed surreal particularly as the subject salties seemed disproportionately bigger than Stephen's boat.
Stephen then travelled to Katherine to spend time with his goddaughter who led him on a Parkrun and sightseeing, including a cruise of the Katherine Gorge. Here "freshies" featured in his travels.
The next National Dance gathering will be in Brisbane in July 2025, so we look forward to another entertaining report in the new year.
Many thanks Stephen for an excellent presentation.

Rotary Clubs of the ACT Emergency Services Community Awards
The Annual Rotary Clubs of the ACT Emergency Services Community Awards dinner took place at the Hellenic Club in Woden last Friday evening, 9 August.
The organising committee, comprising both Rotarians and Emergency Services personnel, sought suggestions from Committee members about someone who could be asked to be the photographer on the night. This is an important role, especially for finalists and their families seeking a photographic record of the evening.
My suggestion was our very own Ross Brown, who agreed to take on the role and did a sterling job on the night. Thank you, Ross!

Peace Bell Promotion - seeking donations
As agreed at our recent meetings, RC Canberra Burley Griffin has agreed to support advertising in the National Capital School Excursion Planner. This magazine is distributed to every school in Australia (10,400) and promotes activities for visiting school groups to our fair city. Tours of Nara Peace Park, including a visit to the Peace Bell, are part of this club's work in promoting peace in the world, especially engaging young people.
The club agreed to support advertising for three years starting from 2025. Currently the discounted price is $750 for a quarter page advertisement in 2025. Seven members have already donated to fund this initiative. Thank you to Andrea, Bill, Monica, Ross, Erik, Michael and Astrida. Further donations are most welcome!
The preferred method for the donation is by way of a direct deposit into the Peace Bell account, this saves the PayPal admin fees which are around 5% if using the Peace Bell Web site. Here are the details:
Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin - Peace Bell Account
BSB: 062-902
Account Number: 1037 8069
Description for the transfer "Surname Advertising" e.g. "Brown Advertising".
This way the Ross can easily identify who the deposit is from.
Thank you all for your support.

From the Treasurer
Just a short note to let you know that we have set the 2024-2025 Rotary dues at $380.00 (a modest increase from last year’s dues).
Dues invoices were sent out last week. Please contact me ASAP if you haven’t received yours. Thanks to those who have paid already.
It is preferred that your payment is made by electronic transfer straight into the Club’s Bank account, this will save us on the merchant fees charged by MYOB. Payment instructions were included in the invoice.
Should you wish to discuss payment of your dues, please feel free to call me or shoot me an email.
Regards
Treasurer Ross

Next meeting: ANU Classics Museum
Our Rotary Club is most fortunate to have a guided tour of the ANU Classics Museum, located in the AD Hope Building on ANU Campus.
We will be hosted by volunteer guides Sue Chessell and Jan Finley, starting at 11 am on Thursday 15 August. There’s the option of an informal lunch after the tour for those interested.
The Museum, which was established in 1962, displays over 600 objects that provide insights into the cultural practices of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. It features examples of ancient art and objects of daily life ranging across Roman Britain, Europe, Northern Africa, and the Near and Middle East.
Parking available in the underground carpark off Kingsley St in ANU.
Please advise George (
george.wilson@awt.com.au) if you are able to be there, and if you are bringing any guests. Knowing numbers asap would be helpful in case we need to request additional guides.
