Member Stephen helping with parking for the Canberra Show last weekend. He found taking $10 from each driver (or an occasional passenger), either electronically or in cash, quite a satisfying activity.

PEACE BELL CEREMONY AT THE PEACE PARK IN WAGGA ON THE WEEKEND AND OTHER ACTIVITIES.

On Sunday the 28th Michael Rabey attended the Peace Bell ceremony in Wagga hosted by the Kooringal Rotary Club. The Ceremony awarded School and Community Awards.

A Dinner was also organised on the 25th February to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Rotary District Peace Communities with Wagga being the first Rotary Peace City in the World. Peace pole 93 was unveiled with an explanation from PDG Raymond King.

Also Rotary Peace Pole 250 was unveiled in the Wagga Botanical Gardens on Saturday the 25th February. This Peace Pole recognises the change from the District Governor Leo Farrelly to the new Governor Geraldine Rurenga. The Pole sits in an attractive garden bed and includes the Wiradjuri Aboriginal language of the region and languages of recently arrived nationalities to the region.

VOLUNTEERS FOR A HERITAGE PROJECT AT WESTON PARK ARE REQUESTED

I am currently engaged in compiling a list of interested members from across Clubs, who would like to join Rotary Club of Canberra volunteers in registering a volunteer group with ACT Urban Services to help initiate the Weston Park Nursery Heritage Project.  I do have just sufficient names to kick start this but would welcome any further Rotarians who would like to join us.  As a refresher, I've attached a copy of an outline of this project, which of course would develop over time.  Rotary Club of Canberra is happy to proceed with myself as coordinator.  If it gets up succesfully, I would be eventually project envoy for the District.

It is important to note that this would be among the first environmental projects involving members from across various clubs.

There are real advantages for our District in involvement in this albeit modest project.

(i) Active engagement with community organisations and the general public in one of the most significant underdeveloped heritage landscapes in Canberra

(ii) Opportunity to promote Rotary and the Rotary Foundation (this latter as recipient of fund raising together with improvements to the garden grounds of course)

(iii) A couple of outdoor events (ivy removal, potential tree plantings and guided tours) per year which would provide wonderful experiences for individual Rotarians - plus some potential Tree Therapy.

(iv) Potential scope to develop new projects as we progress.

I plan to organize an afternoon tea at the Oaks Brasserie to further outline this project sometime around Sunday 21 May 2023 to further galvanise interest.

I would like you to circulate these developments among potentially interested membership.  If I have not spoken to your particular club about this before, and you would like to hear more please let me know (I'll be overseas though until 5 April).

For interest volunteers who would like to join us, I need name, email and phone contact and mail address please to add to the volunteer list for ACT Urban Services - we can accept more names as go of course.  No commitments to particular events required at this stage.

There will be more information about a May get-together in early April.

JOKE #2 OLDER LADIES
Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a HWP  Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 KPH.
Says he to himself: "This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!"  So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over.
Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies,  two in the front seat and three in the back...wide eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him "Officer, I don't understand, I was  doing exactly the speed limit!
What seems to be the problem?"
"Ma'am," the officer replies, "you weren't speeding, but you should know that  driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers."  "Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit  exactly...Twenty-two kilometres an hour!" ..the old woman says a bit proudly.  The HWP Officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that 22 is the  highway number, not the speed limit.
A bit embarrassed, the woman grins and thanks the officer for pointing out her error.
"But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask...Is everyone in this car OK?  These women seem awfully shaken, and they haven't made a peep this whole  time," the officer asks.
"Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Highway 189

Eric.
