Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin
NewsNotes
2 July 2020
From the President
I think we can all agree that the Change Over meeting, via Zoom, last Thursday
was a great success (with minor sound hiccups). Michael put considerable effort into the evening and it was appreciated.
The latter part of our Rotary year posed a few problems to say the least, but I think overall we overcame most and finished the year in good spirits.
We have excellent committees in place to start the 2020–21 year, and I look forward to what we can all achieve without any more external setbacks.
This Thursday we return to the Commonwealth Club, and I ask that as many members as possible come along (after advising Tony).
I have several matters to discuss and get your opinions on, along with the fact we have an extremely interesting guest speaker.
In conclusion, I once again thank Past President Michael and his team for their effort during the 19/20 year.
Joke of the day
A man owned a small farm in Australia.
The Tax Office claimed he was not paying proper wages to his staff and sent a representative out to interview him. "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the rep.
"Well", replied the farmer, "there's my farm hand who's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $500 a week plus free room and board. He also gets triple time for working on a Sunday and a slab of beer for a Happy Hour every Friday.
“The cook has been here 18 months and I pay her $400 per week plus free room and board. She doesn't work Sundays and I provide paid satellite television for free in her room.
"Then there's the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $20 a week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of whisky every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally".
"That's the guy I want to talk to … the half-wit" says the rep.
"That would be me", replied the farmer".

Next week
George Wilson will talk on managing abundant kangaroos – improving welfare, enhancing sustainability and reducing wastage.
Shared Rotarian of the Year – from Peter Judge
The award of Rotarian of the Year, jointly with Chris Gray, came as a complete surprise to me. I was absolutely overwhelmed and quite unable at that moment to make any kind of coherent response. May I say now that I deeply appreciate the honour, and hope that I can continue to serve my Club for some time to come.
May I also offer my warm congratulations to Chris.
Peter Judge
