From the President

Hello Club Members

We meet at the Royal Canberra Club this week and we are trialling the ordering at the Bar for food and an optional beverage. The price will be $40.00 and will get expresso coffee at the end of the meal. We want you to order before you come into the Meeting room to give the Kitchen time to get the meals out before our speaker starts at 1.00pm. You can order a beverage there as well and you pay for this based on what you order.

We had a great tour of the ANU Classics Museum and photos will be provided in the Bulletin. This Museum is a hidden jewel of Archaeology and the hands-on display was interesting to see how peoples thousands of years ago were able use lamps to work on their laptops. The ancient Romans and Greeks have provided the foundation of our modern living with their knowledge of Science, Architecture, medicine, astronomy, governance and mathematics.

Next week a colleague from the Probus Club will be telling us the history of how his forbears came to Australia via Assisted Passage. This is a well-researched story and a great deal of documentation is provided.

I was an Adjudicator at the Woden Sunrise Clubs MUNA weekend debating competition. The program gives Year 11 and 12 students the chance to improve their debating and speaking skills in the environment of the Old Parliament House; House of Representatives. The debates are based on Resolution actually presented to the United Nations. Each student is assigned a nation to represent and put the views of that Nation to the Assembly. The students often dress in their appropriate national costume so they put some effort into getting the most of the weekend.

I have more accurate information from Gary Davis on the Woden Sunrise Meeting times:

‘Just to clarify my previous information about the new meeting arrangements for the Rotary Club of Woden Daybreak:

All club meetings will continue to be held at the SHOUT Meeting Room, Pearce Community Centre  (1, Collett Place, Pearce ACT).

Meetings on the 1st and 3rd Fridays will continue from 7.30am-8.30am

On the 2nd and 4th weeks, the meetings will move to Thursday nights from 6pm-7pm, after which members and visitors will have the option to go out to dinner at a local restaurant.

When there is a 5th Friday, there will be no meeting, but the club will have an informal brunch at a local café on the following day (Saturday)’.

Yours in Rotary

From the Treasurer
Just a short note to let you know that we have set the 2024-2025 Rotary dues at $380.00 (a modest increase from last year’s dues).

Dues invoices were sent out recently. Please contact me ASAP if you haven’t received yours. Thanks to those who have paid already.

It is preferred that your payment is made by electronic transfer straight into the Clubs Bank account, this will save us on the merchant fees charged by MYOB. Payment instructions were included in the invoice.

Should you wish to discuss payment of your dues, please feel free to call me or shoot me an email.

Regards
Treasurer Ross

Next meeting: at the Royal Canberra Golf Club
Our next Club meeting will be held on Thursday, 22 August 2024, at the Royal Canberra Golf Club. Come along to hear Dr John Richards speak on his family history “The Poachers Legacy”.

As advised by President Russell’s message above, our meal ordering arrangements have changed. To reinforce his message: when you arrive at the Club go straight to the bar and order your meal from the menu. Tell them you are from the Rotary Club in the meeting room. Purchase your drink of choice and pay for it at the bar. When you come into the meeting room, bring your drink with you and pay the door team for your lunch, which will be $40.00.

Please RSVP to the Club Runner invitation from Ross asap if you have not already done so.

Nusa Tenggara Association (NTA) Donors Trip to Flores
NTA is a charity formed and located in the ACT. For over 30 years it has actively delivered aid programs in poor farming communities of eastern Indonesia, some of our nearest neighbours and people living in extreme poverty. At any one time it works with some 200 community groups and 60 schools.

NTA invites members to join its annual donors’ trip to Flores for the week 20 to 26 October. This is an ideal opportunity to join other Rotarians to see first-hand its work with poor farming communities in Flores. Participants will visit a variety of communities to observe efforts in improving agriculture, tanks and toilets, ikat weaving and education. A highlight is a school festival featuring local music, song, dance and costumes. There are just 3 spots left.

For more information, please contact the NTA Executive Officer, Phil Domaschenz, on 0406930835 or email phil2dom@gmail.com, or Heath McMichael on email hmcmichael@tpg.com.au.
