Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin - News Notes 9th February

Notes on the Run:

Welcome back everyone. We have a busy start to the year. Fundraising with parking at the festival of speed is completed and next we are helping at the Canberra Show.
We have community events coming up including the Rotary Community Service Awards. The Peace Walk and the Chinese Lantern Festival. There will be something for everyone to get involved with.
We are always on the lookout for new presenters for lunch. If you have half an idea let myself or Russel know and we can work together.
Have a great year!

Last Week’s Meeting: The Rotary Foundation – PDG Phil Armstrong OAM

(Awards for donations to the Rotary Foundation: Chair Stephen, guest PDG Phil Armstrong OAM, PDG Monica Garrett, Graham Howieson and John Little)
A very informative presentation on the strategies of the Rotary Foundation (RF) was made by our friend PDG Phil Armstrong who was introduced by our PDG Monica Garrett. Phil was recently acknowledged for his work by the Governor General awarding him an Order of Australia Medal.
Phil reminded us that the main objects of the Foundation are to support Rotary members in their efforts to improve lives, promote peace, and fight disease worldwide (particularly Polio).
It is supported by donations, particularly from Rotarians and Clubs. Our Club has a proud history of donating mainly through individuals and has in place donation programmes like the Centurian donations.
It is a very well-regarded Charity with over 88% distributed and substantial support from wealthy individuals like the Bill and Melinda Gates, the UN and governments. It has funded part of our West Timor programmes with the NTA in the past and presently may be able to assist with the expansion of the Peace Poles programme.
A very interesting presentation thank you Phil.
At the conclusion of the presentation Phil provided Paul Harris pins to Graham, John and Stephen in recognition of their donations to the Foundation. Well done!
Ed.
Festival of Speed 31 January and 1 February
Treasurer Ross reported that our efforts at helping at the Festival of Speed car parking organization was well received and that we should expect a commensurate dividend from the takings of about $20,000 for our efforts.
Our next big community effort will be on the Canberra Show weekend of the 21 and 22nd February. Can you help? Let Ross know your availability.

Rotary In-joke of the Week:

A child asked his mother, "How were people born?" So his mother said, "Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on." The child then went to his father, asked her the same question and he told him, "We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now." The child ran back to his mother and said, "You lied to me!" His mother replied, "No, your dad was talking about his side of the family."
