9th November 2020

From the President
All members who joined in our ZOOM meeting last Thursday and heard John McKenzie talk about the Rotary Foundation would realize how important this operation is to Rotary.

The way members can best help this program is through the Centurion Program. For just $2 a week  ( $100 in a Rotary year ) will make you a Centurion and help provide the necessary income the Foundation can put to good use.

Let's set a goal to have as many members as possible become Centurions this year.

Next Thursday the 12th our guest speaker is Mirko Milic from LEXUS. As well as being a very interesting talk we all know how generous LEXUS has been to our Club so lets have a full house to show we also support them.

My understanding is that there are now few tickets available for our Fred Smith dinner  on December 17th so if you intend to join us and have not advised George do so ASAP.

Duties for the 12th of November.

WHY ??
  • WHY do ships and aircraft use "mayday" as their call for help?
BECAUSE this comes from the French word m'aidez- meaning " help me" - and is pronounced, approximately, "mayday'.

  • WHY is shifting responsibility to someone else called passing the buck?
BECAUSE in card games it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing , he would 'pass the buck' to the next player.

  • WHY are people in the public eye said to be "in the limelight" ?
BECAUSE limelight, invented in 1825, was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer "in the limelight" was the centre of attention.
