WELCOME ROTARIANS and FRIENDS

to the WEEKLY NEWS NOTES

THE PEACE PROJECT

International Day of Peace

We hope that you can join us at the Canberra Peace Bell from 11am this Wednesday, 21 September to recognise the United Nations International Day of Peace

There will be a unique performance by Fred Smith and a Chorus of Women during the ceremony and a number of speakers on the day expressing their thoughts on peace and the importance of building peace by ending racism.

The ceremony is a joint partnership between the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin and United Nations Information centre for Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.

In the case of rain please bring your umbrella and while there will be some chairs available you may wish to bring your own folding chair to be sure of a seat.

Hoping to see you on Wednesday and best wishes

Michael Rabey

Peace Poles and World Peace Day Celebrations at Mawson

Dear Bill Andrews

Mawson Primary School’s observation of World Peace Day at our Peace Pole this morning (12 Sept) was a moving and respectful moment in time for our students and staff. I wish to thank you for making the time to join us and to deliver the message of peace by the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

This was a most significant ceremony for us in that our primary school students are our future adult citizens who will hopefully work hard to promote the need for peace internationally!

Jennifer Thomas

Classroom Teacher, Mawson Primary School

YOUTH PROJECTS

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)

RYLA is a seven-day program run in January for young people aged 18 to 30 to learn all things leadership. It covers topics such as leadership theory, character strengths, social awareness and empathy, mental health and resilience, budgeting, ethics, conflict resolution, goal setting, time management, and more. There are also practical activities for participants to test out their leadership styles and learn more about themselves.

The next RYLA will be held from Saturday 7th to Friday 13th January 2023 in Murrumbateman NSW.

If any Club member knows of a young person that would be interested in and benefit from RYLA, please contact Youth Committee Chair Stephen on telephone 0430 113 580.

Last Week's Meeting (September 15th)

Fundraising lunch: Dr Brad Tucker, Astrophysicist

Dr Brad Tucker spoke to a large group at the Commonwealth Club about the mysteries of the universe, including:

  • the Big Bang;

  • why stars explode (50 stars explode every second); and

  • how the latest developments in telescopes will enable us to see distant galaxies more clearly (but with the caveat that, because the universe is expanding at an increasingly faster rate, there are some parts of the universe we will never be able to see).

Thankfully, there was no test following his talk. And the event raised needed $$ for the Club’s indigenous projects.

Next Week's Meeting (September 29th)

Liz Hanna from the Environmental Health Working Group of the World Federation of Public Health will speak to us on Australia's State of the Environment (SOE) Fail - Government's Duty to Protect Human and Environmental Health.

OTHER ROTARY at WORK and COMMUNITY NOTES

Mangoes are coming

The end of winter is definitely in sight when the word 'mangoes' appears in a subject line!

Woden Daybreak Rotary's mango fundraiser is on again and the details are attached.

We have been in touch with the farmers and are very happy to report that the mango crop looks good this year.

This year the fundraiser supports two wonderful Rotary programs: the eradication of polio and Operation Cleft.

We would really appreciate it if you would share this information as widely as possible through your networks and encourage your contacts to do the same.  These mangoes make great gifts and freeze really well too.

Happy mango-ing everyone.

ACT FOR BEES

With Spring upon us, now is the time to start thinking about planting for pollinators.  The wet winter and the forecast rain through summer means that there’s no better time to get plants into the ground!  Download the ACT for Bees Planting Guide to create a delicious smorgasbord in your garden for hungry bees and other pollinators.
Please come see us at Floriade.  We will be talking about Creating a Bee Friendly Garden along with the Canberra Environment Centre on
Wednesday 21st Sept 11am & Thursday 13th October 12.30 pm. Book here. Check out the Floriade programme here.

Rotarians for Bees (Victoria) are working to expand their wonderful Planting for Pollinators initiative into NSW and the ACT. We are supporting them by sharing our PowerPoint presentation about the importance of pollinators for food security, biodiversity and healthy ecosystems which includes wide range of planting guides and educational resources.  More on this exciting development in coming months. If you belong to a Rotary Club, please let us know if you would like to join in and if you would like us to present to your community organisation.

The recent release of the
State of the Environment Report by the Federal Government has identified the key factors which are threatening biodiversity across Australia and impacting on our quality of life.  Whilst many of the statistics in the report point to very serious environmental threats, the report also identifies key areas where community, government and business can work together. According to the report, Australia’s cities and towns are home to more than 96% of our population and 46% of our threatened species.  For ideas about what you can do
in your yard or the community, read the Conversation article here.
