Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin News Notes 16th February 2026 -
Notes on the Run
It was great to see everyone back at the golf club last week, even if we had to dodge the occasional unruly Lexus golfer! I also hope everyone is feeling more secure with their online safety.
Looking ahead, we have parking at the Canberra show next weekend. We also have several upcoming events, including the peace walk and the community service awards.
Have a great week!
President Warrick.
Last week's speaker - Ruth Oettle - "Anything Tech - Keeping Safe On Line"
We were delighted to welcome Ruth Oettle at our last meeting to give members tips on how to stay safe online. Ruth has been a scout leader for over 20 years, a Rotary youth exchange participant, an ABC Radio producer and currently runs a work-integrated social enterprise, Allara Creative, which employs refugee women and provides training and mentoring.
Ruth presented a very informative and at times thought provoking talk about cyber safety.
Key messages and tips for staying safe online
Technology is a great enabler but is important that we learn how to stay safe online.
There are two main ways that people are negatively affected: being hacked (=burglary, having your identity stolen) and being scammed (=being fooled, losing money, assets etc).
Passwords are key to staying safe. They must be unique, long and strong and totally random.
One password for one thing. Every account matters if you don’t want to lose your identity.
There is no need to remember passwords. Either write them in an indexed notebook or stored electronically (password protected Excel document, using apps: Google Password Manager, Apple Password).
Turn on 2 factor authentication if using Facebook so people can’t take over your Facebook account.
There are several warning signs re a scam email: e.g. pressure to act quickly, dodgy URL (email address), poor spelling/grammar, too good to be true.
Check out the Australian Government ScamWatch website to learn about scams and report them. https://www.scamwatch.gov.au
Our ‘to do’ list
*Update 1-2 passwords a day by going to each of your account sites and pressing ‘forgot password’ and updating.

Coming Up - Club lunch at Annie’s Place, Thursday, 19 February
Next Thursday, 19 February, we have a Club outing to Annie’s Place, a drop-in centre that serves food and distributes groceries to disadvantaged people in Queanbeyan.
We’ll meet at the usual time – noon onwards for a formal start at 12:30 pm. Cost will be $30 per head, all of which will be donated to the work at Annie’s Place.
BYO alcohol is welcome.
Spouses and family members are also welcome to join us.
Annie’s Place is part of St Benedict’s Community Centre, at the corner of Anne and Brigalow Streets, Queanbeyan (bottom right of map below). Off-street parking is available on Brigalow Street and the entry to Annie’s Place is from Anne Street. The easiest way to get there from the ACT is to head towards Queanbeyan, turn right at Donald Road (second set of lights at the bottom of the hill); left at Anne Street, and left at Brigalow Street to park off-street.
