President's notes continued: TOUR OF THE WESTON PARK BY STEPHEN UTICK
Stephen is looking to create a Friends of Weston Park to revitalise the area as a significant environmental heritage site. He is leading a tour of the English garden at the back of the Yarralumla Nursery on both the 9th and 10th of November at 3.00pm. The cost is $5.00 per person and students are free. I will be going on the Sunday.
DISTRICT CONFERENCE
Over 150 Rotarians attended a successful Conference in Bowral. The MC was Jason Browne from the USA who had previously MC’d the Rotary International Conference. Ken Robertshaw from Manchester was Stephanie Urchicks Representative.
Highlights were:
The story of how Michael Lapina found that Rotary brought him back to his career in Opera Singing and he is currently a District Governor in Melbourne.
An update on the Polio situation with word that the Taliban in Afghanistan is supporting the inoculation of the population by checking every household is inoculated.
How the Rotary Club of Blayney has brought their community together with a Saturday morning Toy Library.
An update of the Malaria disease in the PNG, East and West Timor and Australia. The PNG has the worst record of the disease and Australia has had no reported cases of Malaria from Mosquitos in Australia. Malaria causes more death in the world than any other disease.
The RYPEN Camps will probably move to Sutton as the cost of staff at Borambula Camp has risen to over $6,000 per camp. RYPEN will hopefully move to two camps per year.
The Rotary Youth Exchange Program is now open to Non Rotary Families as long as they fulfil the selection criterion.
Indigenous Peoples from South Dakota spoke about the parallel’s to the Aboriginal Community desecration in their struggle over the last 200 years with the European conquest . They have been on a study tour in Central and Western NSW in recent weeks and Michael and myself took them on a tour of the Nara Peace park on Tuesday last week. The idea of Peace poles and a Peace Bell may be used in their society.
