President's Notes

Hello Club Members,

ROTARY EMERGENCY SERVICES COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS
Each club in the District is asked to nominate a Member of the Emergency Services for an Award for outstanding Service. If anyone has had a positive experience that would commend an Award from Rotary please contact me with their name and details.

THE CANDLE FESTIVAL
Congratulations to Bill and Ross and the rest of the team for raising over $2400 for our Charities.
Also, for Michael, Monica and other helpers for manning the Peace Bell to raise awareness of the Peace Bell in the Park and raising donations to run the Peace bell.

MERGER DISCUSSIONS
To facilitate our merger, it was agreed we should have two joint Meetings in November. The first one is on Thursday the 7th November by joining the Sunrise Club for their Breakfast Meeting at the Mercure at 7.30am. The speaker is Air Commodore Dr Mark Lax who is a Military Historian speaking on the topic of Military History relevant to Armistice day on the 11th of November. Eric will forward to you an invitation for their Meeting for 7.15 starting at 7.30 and finishing at 8.30.

The second Merged Meeting would be with the Burley Griffin Club at the Royal Canberra Golf Club on the 14thNovember. We will not have a speaker for this Meeting as this will allow Members of each Club to get to know each other. We will outline the main activities each Club does during the year so we can feel engaged in maintain these activities within the New Club. The main two activities of the Sunrise Club is the MUNA and Dream Cricket.

MORE notes at the end of this edition.
Yours in Rotary

Last Week's Meeting:
Those members who were not able to attend last week's meeting of the Club missed the news that our Club was named as the No.1 Club in the District for 2023-2024 for per capita Annual Fund giving to The Rotary Foundation.  The award was announced at the District Conference that took place over the previous weekend, attended by President Russell.

This is a significant achievement for our Club, and I thank all those members who have contributed to the Foundation, generally through the Centurion program.  Special thanks go to Treasurer Ross, who uses his best skills to elicit donations from members each week when they are paying for their lunch!
Monica Garrett
Club Foundation Director

If you are not able to perform your allocated duty, please arrange a replacement and advise President Russell (cc Bulletin Editor Stephen). Please advise Stephen of any planned absences to avoid being rostered on while away.

Thank you from Stephen McMillan
Stephen thanks all who donated to his Oceans to Outback fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. He walked a total of 100.3 km during the month of October, exceeding his target of 96 km (one km for each year of the RFDS). Over that time, he and 21 donors (including some members of the Club) raised $1509 for the RFDS. Thank you to all who contributed in any way!
President's notes continued: TOUR OF THE WESTON PARK BY STEPHEN UTICK

Stephen is looking to create a Friends of Weston Park to revitalise the area as a significant environmental heritage site. He is leading a tour of the English garden at the back of the Yarralumla Nursery on both the 9th and 10th of November at 3.00pm. The cost is $5.00 per person and students are free. I will be going on the Sunday.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE
Over 150 Rotarians attended a successful Conference in Bowral. The MC was Jason Browne from the USA who had previously MC’d the Rotary International Conference. Ken Robertshaw from Manchester was Stephanie Urchicks Representative.
Highlights were:
The story of how Michael Lapina found that Rotary brought him back to his career in Opera Singing and he is currently a District Governor in Melbourne.
An update on the Polio situation with word that the Taliban in Afghanistan is supporting the inoculation of the population by checking every household is inoculated.
How the Rotary Club of Blayney has brought their community together with a Saturday morning Toy Library.
An update of the Malaria disease in the PNG, East and West Timor and Australia. The PNG has the worst record of the disease and Australia has had no reported cases of Malaria from Mosquitos in Australia. Malaria causes more death in the world than any other disease.
The RYPEN Camps will probably move to Sutton as the cost of staff at Borambula Camp has risen to over $6,000 per camp. RYPEN will hopefully move to two camps per year.
The Rotary Youth Exchange Program is now open to Non Rotary Families as long as they fulfil the selection criterion.
Indigenous Peoples from South Dakota spoke about the parallel’s to the Aboriginal Community desecration in their struggle over the last 200 years with the European conquest . They have been on a study tour in Central and Western NSW in recent weeks and Michael and myself took them on a tour of the Nara Peace park on Tuesday last week. The idea of Peace poles and a Peace Bell may be used in their society.

A Blast From the Past
Here's a photo of Keith, Bill, Past President Vera,  and Juris with a local villager from the island of Samau where our club was participating in small development projects  for  some very poor communities , under the auspices of the NTA who we have supported over many years.  Dry, arid land where the annual monsoon is the only regular water supply. Our water tanks, toilets and alternate crops and livestock assistance was very welcome. When? About 2008.
