Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin News Notes 2nd March 2026
Notes on the Run from President Warrick
Thanks to Stephen for chairing the meetings in February. It was a good month for the Club activities, speakers and community activities. We should be able to bank about $3000 for our efforts. It has been an unusually hot summer to date so hopefully we can look forward to a cool change in March. Speaking of hot climates, George will be returning soon from his adventure to India where he visited wildlife parks and attended local festivities.
Our esteemed Past President Russell gave a memorable presentation on his research into the Mysteries of Cryptocurrency. We learned that it all started in 2010 when Bitcoin could have been purchased for a few cents. The supply was limited so a simple supply/demand market quickly arose where those wanting to buy some had to pay what those owning them would sell for. This has resulted in the average price rising over many years so that we have a value of Bitcoin today wavering between more than $100,000 each to $60,000.
There was a hearty discussion in the club, with President Warrick adding more technical clarification as we dug deeper.
It’s a case of gambling gone mad – buyers don’t want to “miss out”. Sellers are eyeing gloomy reports of a bust while drooling at the wild fluctuations in price.
Many commentators comment that Bitcoin and others will crash. Will Musk’s DOGE and Trump's version also crash?
By a unanimous vote, our club decided not to invest our superannuation in Crytocurrencies this week.

You need a small computer like this one, and a warehouse and hydro electric power station, to "mine" cryptocurrencies.
