Welcome to another News Notes. Thanks to Russell we have a report of the last meeting, on Zoom. In addition to the usual Club administration material, there’s information on how to buy some of the Club’s surplus beer stocks and some dates for your dairy.

At the last meeting, Acting President Eric asked which country had the highest per capita consumption of coffee. The answer is Finland. And Finns are also the happiest people on earth (https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/happiest-countries-in-the-world). Is this a coincidence? I think not; cartoonist Scott Adams discovered the link back in 2006, as you’ll see if you continue reading until the end of the Bulletin.

Last week’s meeting: Australian Rotary Health update
Screenshot of last Thursday’s Zoom meeting participants, with guest speaker John at the lower right.

Last Thursday John Egan provided an update on the research of Australian Rotary Health (ARH). John is a member of the Wollundry Rotary Club in Wagga Wagga and a Rotary Ambassador for ARH.

ARH started in 1981 and its first objective was to find a cure for Sudden Infant Cot Syndrome. (SIDS). The research has come up with some recommendations and SIDS deaths per 100 babies has fallen by 50% over time. The recommendations are:
1) Do not use pillows in the cot
2) Do not wrap the baby too tightly in blankets, and
3) Leave babies on the backs and not on their front or sides.

Other research areas are Diabetes, Parkinson disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.

A new area of research is focusing on mental health and the program of asking people “are you OK?” (RUOK).

ARH pledges $35,000 over a three-year period to the projects that are selected. It also has an Indigenous scholarship of $2,000 every year. Over recent times it has distributed over $2.5 million and could have distributed another $2.5 million to worthy research projects if the funds were available. Projects are selected on their merits by a 15 member panel of medical experts.

Michael Raby suggested we add a few dollars to the price of our next Commonwealth Club meal to be donated to ARH. He reflected on his own family’s struggle with depression and the consequences for his son.
