WELCOME ROTARIANS and FRIENDS
to the WEEKLY NEWS NOTES
For the 3rd of October 2022.
FROM the DESK of the PRESIDENT

Hi everyone.  We had a good Board meeting on the 29th September, and we welcomed back Monica from her Parisienne adventures.  I’d like to highlight some of the key decisions we were able to make:
  • I need to get a wriggle on and publish the approved minutes for July and August.  So sorry about the tardiness.  I hope to get them up this week.  A simple task that keeps dropping to the bottom of my to-do list.
  • A plaque in some form will be made and installed at he Peace Bell honouring Peter Clapinski who has made all the Peace Poles
  • I shall be making a post on the RI facebook page outlining our efforts for the Peace poles and the Peace bell in preparation for the international conference in Melbourne next year
  • News on the regionalisation pilot:
    • I sent out an email to all 33 paid up members
    • 20 people responded
    • 1 indicated negative response, the rest were positive responses
    • I voted positive to the Project on behalf of the club.
  • For the information of those who didn’t make it the lunch meeting, we have received letters of departures from three of our members, Ron and Sharon have resigned from Rotary, and Sue shall be transferring to the Gungahlin Club which better suits her schedules of activities.
  • We also kept up the discussions about club t-shirts, the amendments to the constitution, the Candle festival, STOMP and the reduction in the number of dance schools since COVID, and a bit of brainstorming on other fundraising ideas.
On that last note if anyone has any ideas – bring them on!!  Let us know!!  Don’t be shy!

If you need any further details on any of the above, just drop a line to president@rccbg.org

Cheers
Andrea Conti

Really, it was a very nice and emotional event, very well attended and very timely as you say.

Rotary Club of Adelaide East Park Supporting Then Peace Bell Project and the RCCBG
IMG_6970.jpg
This Club has picked up the Peace Bell theme and Pamela has made a toast to our club after she did a talk about our Club Peace bell project, the Paul Harris fellow recipient, and the funds  raised for Afghan evacuees, the swimming lesson. Their response in a toast was genuine.
Thank you for sharing your club’s works.

Woden Daybreak Club Promoting the Production of a Video on Protecting the Bush Pea
https://live.staticflickr.com/6056/6327530376_6d09294e40_b.jpg
Summary
  • Clubs in District 9705 are invited to contribute financially to the production of a video about Australian bush peas by the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust (RBGDT) in Sydney.
  • The wonderfully vibrant bush peas are also sometimes called ‘eggs and bacon’ because of their showy orange and yellow flowers.  Eight known species of bush peas are in danger of becoming extinct in our District.
  • The video, which will highlight Rotary’s funding, will focus on the environmental threat to bush peas and encourage more extensive research into them.
  • Time frames
  • Woden Daybreak is inviting clubs to make financial contributions by mid-October to facilitate early filming to coincide with the 2022 Spring flowering season.
  • Woden Daybreak members are considering a local field trip to see flowering bush peas in the Australian National Botanic Gardens or in a local nature reserve in October, when these plants are in full flower. Any other Rotarians and their families who would like to join us are welcome to get in touch.

ROTARY AT WORK AND COMMUNITY NOTES
HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE WORLD POLIO DAY?
PDG MURRAY VERSO, END POLIO NOW COORDINATOR — SEP 12, 2022
World Polio Day (October 24) provides an opportunity for Rotary members to highlight our Number One priority - to create a polio-free world.
Article by PDG Murray Verso, End Polio Now Coordinator
Through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Rotary works with its partners to eradicate polio and to end the suffering from this terrible disease. World Polio Day (October 24) provides an opportunity for Rotary members to highlight our Number One priority - to create a polio-free world.
How will your club mark the occasion? Here are a few suggestions:
  • Join one of the multi district fundraising events such as train rides, walks, cycling events.
  • Join the walk at the Zone 8 Convention on October 30: #walkwithus Polio Walk - Rotary Zone 8 Conference
  • Plan your own local event that engages the local community.
  • Encourage friends, family, work colleagues to donate to Rotary’s PolioPlus Fund. Donate to End Polio | End Polio
  • Dedicate a club meeting to World Polio Day. Invite a guest speaker who is a polio survivor or screen videos about Rotary’s fight against polio. Post the details about this special meeting on your club website and social media.
  • Host a virtual viewing party for friends and club members to watch the official Rotary International Online Global Update on 24 October. Visit the Rotary International | Facebook page to watch with other end polio supporters.
  • Download End Polio Now virtual backgrounds from Rotary’s Brand Centre to customize your online meetings. Virtual backgrounds - End Polio
  • Don’t forget to tell us how you’re observing World Polio Day! Register your club’s participation to tell us how you’re engaging with the global Rotary community. Register Your Event | End Polio
World Polio Day is only a few weeks away. If you haven’t done so already, please discuss with your fellow club members what you can do to highlight our number one priority. More information:World Polio Day | End Polio

NOTES FROM OUR MEMBERS

JUDY RAYMONDS HAVING A GOOD TIME IN ENGLAND

Judy is seen here riding her E bike in the Cotswolds after previously supporting her husband at the Seniors rowing events.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

From Facebook:

“Four old men went into the pro shop after playing 18 holes of golf.
The pro asked, “Did you guys have a good game today?”
The first old guy said, “Yes, I had three riders today.”
The second old guy said, “I had the most riders ever. I had five.”
The third old guy said, “I had seven riders, the same as last time.”
The last old man said, “I beat my old record. I had 12 riders today.”
After they went into the locker room, another golfer who had heard the old guys talking about their game went to the pro and said, “I’ve been playing golf for a long time and thought I knew all the terminology of the game, but what’s a rider?”
The pro said, “A rider is when you hit the ball far enough to actually get in the golf cart and ride to it.”
