From the President

Hello Club Members

MERGER DISCUSSIONS
At our last Board Meeting we discussed the possible merger with the Sunrise Club. The three difficulties that were identified were:

1)Concern over taking on the Activities of the Sunrise Club
2)Possible personality conflicts from some of the members
3)The merger only delays the inevitable decline in our Club Membership when we should be looking to getting new Members to join.

A paper outlining the Board’s position will be circulated on Thursday lunch time.

Our Meeting this week will discuss this approach and get feedback from Members on the cessation of the merger negotiations. No speaker will be available this Thursday but the following Thursday we will have Laura Cox our sponsored student at the RYLA Training. See you at the Royal Canberra Golf Club at 12.15 for 12.30 lunch.

HOME HOSTING OF ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENTS FROM 9 TO 13 MARCH
Tara Pullen has cast around the District to seek homes to host students in Canberra as part of the Internation Exchange program from 9 to 13 March. This will involve 4 nights of hosting plus the provision of breakfasts and dinners. The students will be visiting Parliament House, Questacon, The Art Gallery and the Museum of Australian Democracy. The travel arrangements I guess will involve delivering students and picking up them up at the end of the day. This is an opportunity to learn about other nations from highly motivated students from overseas.

A letter from Berlin
Anja and Bernd Mewes

Members may find this letter to Michael Rabey from the coordinators of the Berlin Peace Bell both interesting and inspiring:

Berlin, 21.12.2024

Dear Michael, dear Joan,

We send you warm pre-Christmas greetings from Berlin, relaxed Christmas holidays and above all health, optimism and a lot of strength for everything you are planning for the year 2025.

We are constantly fighting for a more socially just and peaceful world, but this fight seems to be a fight against windmills. We have to see that we are not stopping the course of history, that there are forces that are at the levers of global power, that profit interests stand for over the life and existence of humanity. That makes us powerless, but we still don't give up in our fight for a more socially just and peaceful world. Our mission is to educate, educate, educate. We don't have any other chance.

This makes it all the more important that we start to convey the topic of peace in a child-friendly way, especially among the youngest in our society. And with the action of the peace stakes, we are symbolically setting important signs for a peaceful world. We will definitely continue this campaign in the new year.

Dear Michael, I like to think back to the time when we got to know and appreciate each other personally in Berlin. The impressions we were able to experience in the encounters with you and your dear wife will remain unforgotten.

The idea and symbolism of the world peace bells remain present and in our joint action for a more peaceful world the incentive not to let up, that diplomacy and international understanding must be the basis of our joint action for a more peaceful world. Even if the signs of the times do not point in this direction at the moment.

But for now, a peaceful Christmas season for you and your family

With peace-loving greetings from Berlin
Anja and Bernd Mewes
