- News from the Cooma Rotary Club on Peace Poles
Rotary PEACE POLE PROJECT – initiated by Rotary to celebrate 100 year Anniversary of Rotary – plan to place 100 Peace Poles in 100 schools.
This has been achieved but more schools have requested so it continues. The local Christian School has requested one and so we will offer to fund for all schools in District @ $280 each.
The schools can choose which 3 languages to have their Peace Message in. There is a commitment to hold an annual celebration on the International Day of Peace.
The project is linked to the Rotary Peace Bell in Canberra.

Rotary International Convention: Melbourne, 27-31 May 2023
Just a reminder to members that the last day for the early registration discount for next year's Rotary International Convention in Melbourne is this coming Thursday, 15 December.
Each year Rotary holds its International Convention in a different country.
Having the Convention in Australia presents the ideal opportunity for Australian Rotarians to experience the internationality of Rotary. The last International Convention held in Australia was in Sydney in 2014, so it's basically a once in a decade opportunity to experience the breadth of Rotary's programs and activities across the world, without the expense of international travel.
A couple of our members have already registered for next year's Convention and I encourage other members to consider registering while the discounted registration offer is still available. Registration is available at convention.rotary.org

WE WANT YOU AS A NEW RECRUIT!
In 2023, the D9705 Annual District Conference will be in Queanbeyan from 20-22 October.
It should be a great event with an impressive range of speakers and the chance for Rotarians and Rotaractors across our District to catch up with old friends, make new friends, talk about projects of mutual interest, and discuss where they see Rotary heading in the future.
However, while all that sounds good, we need people on the Conference Organising Committee to help make it happen.
Perhaps your first reaction is that I don’t have the time to be involved. That’s understandable, we are all juggling balance in our lives.
However, we don’t expect the workload to be that heavy on members of the Committee. The Committee will likely consist of some 7-8 people who will work on specific aspects of the Conference over the next 11 months. Workload will vary over that time, with planning the key task in the next few months and implementation being the major focus in September and October 2023.
You don’t necessarily need to live in the Queanbeyan/Canberra region to be on the Committee, as meetings will be on Zoom or a combination of Zoom and face to face. Of course, we also hope to have a mix of Rotarians and Rotaractors on the Organising Committee too.

kylo@pcug.org.au preferably by Saturday 24 December, outlining a bit about yourself and how your skills and experience could contribute to the successful planning and implementation of our 2023 Annual District Conference.

A FURTHER UPDATE ON THE FLOOD SUPPORT IN THE CENTRAL WEST
Purpose. The purpose of this message is to provide all D9705 clubs with a view of flood relief actions in the district and what is planned.
Club Presidents & Secretaries: Please pass this to your club members and friends of Rotary as appropriate.
Requests to clubs for support are shown below like this --> Club Action:
Flood Situation. Eugowra is clearly the most heavily damaged location in District 9705 and the our relief action is concentrated there. Flood-affected communities in Cabonne Council such as Molong and Cudal as well at Forbes and Condobolin are beginning the long-term processes of recovery and restoration. Further west, the flood waters are now mostly moving down rivers and channels and overland to towards the River Murray. The towns of Lake Cargelligo and Hillston are still affected and many farms are underwater or are dealing with the consequences of inundation. Mosquitoes are becoming a widespread problem. You can get a sense of the situation in
this Guardian report.
D9705 Response and Actions. Our district's actions are now re-orienting from providing immediate relief to longer-term recovery initiatives and projects Over the last three weeks we have been providing immediate relief at Eugowra in the form of:
- the receipt and management of donated goods both at Eugowra and Orange;
- the operation of a kitchen to provide food and respite for Eugowra residents;
- operation of a BBQ to help feed volunteers for other organisations at Eugowra; and
- provision of an interim storehouse at the Eugowra Showground containing donated items available free to residents.
Those activities have been undertaken by a team led by Michelle Duncan (President, RC of Orange Daybreak). Colin Nadya has worked for three weeks continuously at Eugowra to organise and coordinate people and goods on the ground. Robert Shore (President RC of Parkes) and Scott Griffiths (RC of Orange) have verified the evolving situation, liaised and coordinated with other organisations, orchestrated volunteers and brought order to a complex and changing situation. Deidre Tome in the less-affected Wagga Wagga-Riverina has been doing similar coordination and liaison functions. Their contributions cannot be understated.
Robert Shore also organised a videographer to capture D9705 actions, experiences and learnings. The hope is that this will be a record of the district's response and that it will inform Rotary's response to future disaster relief activities. At the same time, other Rotary clubs have acted independently to help bring relief. In particular:
- The RC of Forbes (Chris Finkel) and Forbes Ipomoea (Sue-anne Nixon) have raised and received sufficient funds from generous Rotary clubs across and beyond D9705 to enable the distribution of cash vouchers via the NSW Rural Financial Counselling Service and Catholic Care.
- The RC of Hall (Paul Tyrell) has provided $20,000 in cash vouchers to the NSW Rural Financial Counsel Service in Wagga Wagga for similar distributions.
- Club Action: If your club is considering undertaking a direction action to assist, I would appreciate being informed so we can take advantage of your generous actions avoid any duplication.
At another level, DGE Andrea Grosvenor has worked with RAWCS/RABS to bring their experience and resources to bear, and to liaise with other Rotary districts in flood-affected Victoria. RAWCS has made large quantics of large mosquito-repellent candles available and these will be distributed in the new two weeks from Wagga Wagga (where they have just arrived) and from Parkes. Brad Quilliam (RAWCS National Projects Supervisor and Southern Region Volunteers Supervisor) has an active role in facilitating this initiative.
- RAWCS/RABS Project 32-2022-23 has also collected many donations (Thanks to all clubs and Rotarians that have contributed so generously). In the next week, the project will be placed under D9705 management for use in flood relief and recovery benevolent projects. We are now looking for projects of relatively short duration of direct benefit to flood-affected people and that require no or minimal government approval (local or state).
Outcome of Actions to Date. We have received feedback from Craig Ronan (RC of Bathurst and NSW SES Coordinator Planning - Hazards) that the communities in the flood affected area are very appreciative of Rotary's efforts. Similar appreciation has been expressed by Sean Haynes who as President of the Eugowra Progress Association is the defacto community leader. He also noted that without Rotary's help he would not have have been able to undertake several activities to prepare the Eugowra community for the next steps in their recovery.
And last week, an Area Governor from D9685 who brought volunteers, cash and donated goods stated:
"It was an eye-opener being on the ground both in Cowra & later at Eugowra. What an amazing team of Rotarians & community volunteers on the ground - making the difference… truly inspirational. Thank you for your Service!"
Next Steps, Planning and Club Actions. There is still a fair bit to do and I am conscious the Rotary leaders and volunteers onsite have been working long hours and travelling continuously for three weeks. This places a lot of stress on people, particularly in the lead up to Christmas. As we begin the recovery and restoration phase at Eugowra and elsewhere, some key actions will be as follows:
- Distribution of mosquito repellent candles across the district via Rotary clubs or kindred organisations that can get them to where they are needed. Club Action: I will write separately to Club Presidents in affected areas about the receipt and distribution of the mosquito candles. Please stand ready to assist Deidre Tome and Robert Shore when they seek your help in distributing candles in your area.
- Slim down & close the kitchen and BBQ relief action at Eugowra, consistent with volunteer availability and community needs;
- Manage unrequested donated goods (still arriving) and moving their storage and management to Eugowra Showground. Club Actions: The assistance of volunteers would be greatly appreciated, even if it is only for a day out two. Contact Robert Shore: shore.rob@hotmail.com
- Plan short-term action through collaboration with Sean Haynes, President of the Eugowra Progress Association, to determine where Rotary action is best employed in the near term. The immediate need is for continuing volunteer help at the Eugowra Showground and (possibly) to conduct some school holiday activities for children (TBA)
- Work with RAWCS and communities on mid to longer term term projects that bring donation funds to bear appropriately. This will involve consultation with the Eugowra and other flood-affected communities on their needs, the preparation of a Project Expenditure Proposal, and the subsequent execution of projects. That will almost certainly not take place until Jan 2023 and beyond. Club Action: we may seek help from clubs in taking on the delivery of a project. That will be advised as soon as possible, but probably around Feb 2023.

Message from the Chair Of ROMAC
We welcome back Maggie Alexander to produce this E-Newsletter after a 4-year absence and extend our many thanks to retiring editor, PDG Gina Growden, for her tireless efforts, not only with this newsletter, but with all the many other tasks she has undertaken since 2019.
Life continues to be exciting and hectic for everyone associated with ROMAC. In the last 3 months, we have brought in 4 new patients, made a presentation at the Rotary Zone 8 Conference in Canberra and conducted a large planning workshop in Brisbane. The Brisbane workshop included a professional development session and workshop for our doctors from around Oceania. Our Medical Director provides more detail below. There was also a special two day workshop for our key ROMAC office bearers and volunteers.
Our newsletter contains patient updates from our Deputy Chair and our Canberra Regional Chair on the progress of 4 patients Melenaite, William, Vinna and Jasminah and I am pleased to say the progress has been positive and encouraging. Our Treasurer writes about our information booth and presentation in Canberra at the Zone 8 Conference, which showcased our work in ROMAC. We have commenced a process to update our strategic plan, by laws, referral process, risk matrix and our communications and evaluation plans and Brisbane provided us with an excellent opportunity to make a significant start on these tasks.
An important outcome of our meetings in Brisbane was that, with our new committee structures and all the tasks we are trying to undertake, we desperately need more volunteers to join our ranks at the District, Regional and National levels. We are specifically looking for Rotarians or Rotaractors with skills in areas like fundraising, marketing, communications, producing newsletters and maintaining databases, liaising with Government and Hospitals, paediatrics, finance, recruiting, hosting to join our committees. ROMAC is a wonderfully rewarding project to be involved with and appeals to all ages so give it some consideration and let us know how you would like to help by emailing me at chair@romac.org.au. As 2022 comes to an end, it is a great time to reflect on the year and to thank the many people who have helped and supported ROMAC over the last twelve months. We are most fortunate to have come through the pandemic relatively unscathed and with the resources and enthusiasm to again embark on providing life-saving / life changing treatment to children from our neighbouring countries.
I would specifically like to thank all our hard-working ROMAC volunteers for all their efforts and the Rotary Clubs, Rotarians and friends who have continued to support us.

He walked to the window of his bedroom to get a deep breath of the beautiful day outside. He then noticed there was a jackass lying dead in the middle of his front lawn. The conversation went like this:"Good morning. This is Sergeant Jones. How might I help you?”
"And the best of the day te yerself. This is Father O'Malley at St. Ann's Catholic Church. There's a jackass lying dead in me front lawn and would ye be so kind as to send a couple o'yer lads to take care of the matter ?"
Sergeant Jones, considering himself to be quite a wit and recognizing the foreign accent, thought he would have a little fun with the Good Father, replied, "Well now Father, it was always my impression that you people took care of the last rites !”
