From the Editor
Please remember: there is no meeting at the Commonwealth Club this week. Rather, we have our changeover dinner on Thursday evening. This will support a worthy cause, and we’d welcome your support, whether you can attend the changeover or not – see details below.

Otherwise, it’s another packed edition (thanks to all contributors – you make the editor’s work worthwhile): our newest member; a tour of the Peace Bell – tomorrow; details of the changeover fundraising cause; information on the auction; a report of the District 9705 changeover; information on our Club and District’s support for a “Resolution on the UN Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons”; a photo from the last meeting; the meeting duty roster; and, last but not least, something to make you smile. Happy reading!

For any members interested Russell and I will be conducting school tours of the Peace Bell for students from Clermont State School at 11am Tuesday 20 June. please feel free to come along and see what the tours contain. If you might consider becoming a guide for tours this would be an opportunity to see how they are conducted.

Raffle tickets and donations for Camp for Ukrainian children
Readers would be aware that the changeover dinner aims to raise money for a camp for children for Ukraine. We’ve received the following information about the camp from Rotary in Poland:
  • the camp will provide a break for 50 participants (mostly children, with four teachers);
  • it will run for ten days;
  • it will be held in accommodation close to Warsaw, with meals, sports activities, swimming pool, ping-pong, outdoor activities in surrounding pine forest provided on site; and
  • there will be visits to attractions in Warsaw.
The estimated cost is around $35,600 (Australian dollars). Two Rotary Clubs (Warsaw and Frankfurt) have together donated just under half this cost, but more funds are needed for this to go ahead. By buying raffle tickets or donating money you are helping this (all raffle monies and donations, along with the auction proceeds, will be sent to Poland to support this camp).

For those not able to attend the changeover, you may donate towards a camp for Ukrainian children and even buy raffle tickets!

Raffle prizes include a cast iron casserole dish; a bottle of 12 year-old whisky, and several bottles of wine. Be in it to win it! And remember: gamble responsibly.

To donate or buy raffle tickets ahead of time, transfer money to:

Changeover dinner auction – on your bike!
If you’re finding it hard to push your bike uphill, consider bidding on the electric bike being offered at the auction at the changeover on Thursday. With five levels of battery assist, seven gears, and a comfortable seat, worry about hills will be a thing of the past!

District 9705 Changeover
Club Secretary Russell and I attended the District Changeover last Saturday at the Hellenic Club in Woden. The Changeover was well attended, with representation from many Clubs across the District.

The event was an excellent opportunity to hear about the Rotarians in our District who had made very significant contributions to our community in the name of Rotary this year. Outgoing District Governor Geraldine spoke of her admiration for the work of our Rotary Clubs, with accolades for several Rotarians who were given Paul Harris Fellow recognition for their outstanding efforts.

Incoming District Governor Andrea Grosvenor provided details of the year ahead, with the RI President for 2023-24, R Gordon R McInally, at the helm.  His theme for the year is Create Hope in the World.

Andrea is a member of the Rotary Club of Queanbeyan.  Having a local as District Governor is a bonus for those of us who live in Canberra, with District events such as the Changeover being held here.  The District Conference will take place from 20 to 22 October in Queanbeyan, and I encourage our members to take up the opportunity to hear interesting speakers and gain exposure to the wider world of Rotary beyond our Club.

Resolution on the UN Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
On 17 June 2023, after the District Changeover, I was advised that the District Governor of District 9705 has signed off on our resolution to Rotary International which asks RI to endorse the United Nations Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

This is the third time our Club has proposed such a resolution to RI. It comes on the day that Russia announced that they were deploying tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus. I hope that they are not used.

At least our Club and our District have voiced our collective concern about the existence of Nuclear Weapons in the world.

As the peace poles state – May Peace Prevail on Earth.

Last week’s meeting
On 15 June we heard from Rotarian Lynne Duckham, who shared insights from her extensive experience with Rotary and government development programs in neighbouring countries. Pictured is Acting President Liz (left) thanking Lynne after the presentation.

The next meeting is our changeover dinner on Thursday, 22 June.
