Hello Club Members

MERGER DISCUSSIONS
An email has been sent to seek your approval to go to the next stage of discussions on the possible merger with the Rotary Club of Canberra Sunrise. So far I have received 5 yes responses to go forward and 2 nos. Please respond to my email with your answer.

BARBEQUE AT RUSSELL DEW’S HOUSE ON THE THURSDAY THE 12TH OF DECEMBER
We have 10 acceptances as a few people are away or have other functions on that night. I  have asked Eric to be the King of the Barbeque and we will have steaks, sausages, chops and chicken breasts. We are asking for those who are able to bring either a salad or a desert. I have 3 salads and 2 deserts volunteered, which should feed our number of guests.

Beer, wine and soft drink will be available and the club is paying for the meal.

CHRISTMAS GIFT WRAPPING AT WESTFIELD WODEN
I have received word from Westfield that all the days have been allocated to other charity organisations so we will try again next year.

MAJURA PRIMARY SCHOOL ANNUAL ROTARY CITIZENSHIP AWARD
On Wednesday, the 11th of December I will attend the Majura Primary School Year 6 Graduation Assembly to present the Rotary Citizenship Award to the two recipients.

ZONTA PEACE BELL RINGING FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE DIED DUE TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Michael and I will be at this ceremony at the Peace Bell on Tuesday the 10th December starting at 7.00 am. The Peace Bell will be struck once for every woman who has died in the past twelve months due to domestic violence. All members are invited to attend, but please register if you are coming (registration link later in Bulletin).

PEACE FELLOWS VISIT TO CANBERRA, 21 TO 24 JUNE 2025
The visit of the Peace Fellows will require up to ten host families to provide accommodation, one meal on the Sunday, breakfasts in the morning and a pick up and drop off at the start and finish of their visit.

We have 4 volunteers to billet these Peace Fellows. Juris, Warrick, Ross and myself. Other Clubs have been asked so we should be able to cover all the Peace Fellows for accommodation.

NEXT MEETING ON THE 6TH FEBRUARY AT THE ROYAL CANBERRA YACHT CLUB
We will meet at the normal time of 12.30 pm at the Golf Club. The Speaker will be Peter Hoskin on Biera Patrol. Peter is ex-Australian and British Navy and this will be the story of blocking oil to the then nation of Rhodesia in the 1960’s.

DISTRICT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The District AGM was conducted on Sunday the 8th December via Zoom. The Treasurer’s report and the Audit report were passed without change and the budget for the year was $5,500 over budget mainly due to the cost of insurance while membership fees were declining. Most expenditures came in under budget, especially ongoing District projects.

MERRY XMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR MEMBERS AND HONORARY MEMBERS.
The new year brings the options of a merger and some new initiatives to increase our Membership by Bill.

If I do not see you at the barbeque enjoy the break with your family and friends.

Yours in Rotary
Russell Dew

Duty Roster

Canberra Rotary Peace Bell Ringing, TOMORROW, 10 December 2024
7am Lennox Gardens, Yarralumla.

Zonta Says NO to Violence, YES to respectful relationships.

Each year the Zonta Club of Canberra Breakfast participates in the UN “16 days of activism” in honour of the lives lost to domestic violence and to highlight our community need for change and respectful relationships

In seeking to uphold the United Nations Goal No5 to `Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’, we will continue our actions by:
  • highlighting our concerns through social media,
  • lighting of the Parliamentary triangle buildings in orange for December 10th,
  • participating in the ACT Rotary consultative forum,
  • providing information about the impact of domestic violence, and
  • ringing the Peace Bell to honour those who have lost their lives in this calendar year.

We invite you to share with us and the Rotary Club of Burley Griffin in the ringing of the Peace Bell. The Bell will be struck once for each life lost, once for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, once for the children, once for the New Zealand women, and once for the men who have lost their lives through domestic violence. The Rhythm Syndicate Choir will bring their voices to the event.

While the event is free, we ask you to book through Humanitix (https://events.humanitix.com/nara-peace-bell-ringing/tickets?hxchl=hex-qrc&hxref=evt) as numbers are limited. We encourage you to gather from 6.30am for a 7am start and the event will close by 8.30.

Yours sincerely,
Kay Fredericks, Advocacy Chair ZCCB
