From the President

First up a reminder: could all members please bring a gift [see below] for male or female and/or some food lines to the next couple of meetings for donation to a Rotary charity cause.

After trying all avenues we have been unable to come up with a Plan B for our Christmas function December 10th. Due to Covid 19 all the halls we have approached are unable to hold the number we would require. The same problem would apply if we used a private residence because we could not maintain the required spacing. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for the weather to be kind, if not we may have to postpone the event.

See you all at the Canberra Club next Thursday.

Community Services Christmas Gift Collection

Further to Liz Scrivener's recent announcement about collecting gifts for children and families in need, a statement from St John's Church which is co-ordinating the appeal:

Donate toys or help us build a Christmas hamper. Help the children we support to end 2020 on a brighter note.

This year, St John's Care, Uniting Care Kippax, Communities at work, Canberra City Care, St Vincent De Paul Kambah, Gordon Community Care, University of Canberra and Woden Community Service are working together to make sure we can help as many people as possible during the Christmas season.

If you are donating toys it would be wonderful to receive educational toys such as Lego and outdoor toys such as footballs, skipping ropes, softball kits, etc. For teenagers the best gift is a gift card, e.g. Big W, Kmart and Ultimate Teen.

We would also appreciate your help by donating items that will go towards building a hamper for families and people in need. Some suggested items are: Milo/NRG/ Ovaltine (small tin), Gravy, Lollies, Juice, Tube or pkt of chips, Jelly, Christmas pudding, Custard, Pancake mix, Relish/Chutney, Bonbons, Supermarket Gift Cards for people to purchase meat or other fresh items.

Although they are already booking families in from next Tuesday to collect presents they will be accepting presents for a few weeks more. In lieu of Liz I will be collecting your gifts at each Rotary meeting to then drop off to the collection point.

May I kindly request that you have all items to me by close of our Rotary meeting  3rd December 2020.

Many thanks in advance for your generosity.

Sharon

Membership: Webinar

Last week I attended a webinar, the 5th run by the District on Membership. The topic was "Creatures of Habit" and the speaker was Mark Huddleston from the Rotary Club of Seaford in South Australia. Please find the link to the presentation on YouTube here:

https://deref-gmx.com/mail/client/GLpxLsAEsJg/dereferrer/?redirectUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fyoutu.be%2FHfT8TmsOCQk.

The webinar challenges us to look at Rotary Membership. Is our club attractive to new members? Are we doing the best that we can to attract new members?

I have copied one slide from the presentation that the Rotary Club of Seaford believes has assisted them in establishing a new and vibrant club. Food for thought?

I would encourage all members to view the recording as we continue to work on our Membership Plan for the Club

Last Week's Guest Speaker

Last week (12 November) our guest speaker Mirko Milic provided an interesting talk on his interests, both professional and personal. Mirko is Dealer Principal of Lexus Canberra, which is a major sponsor of our Club.

Mirko started his talk with some information on Toyota, which now considered itself to be a mobility company, rather than a car manufacturer. It aims to treat every customer as one would treat a guest in one’s home. Toyota owns the brands Lexus and Hino, and has minority shareholdings in Mazda and Subaru.

Toyota has the biggest market share in Australia. Hybrids are leading the way – the Rav 4 hybrid was the highest selling vehicle in Australia in August. Mirko noted that Toyota had started selling hybrid cars in 1997 and it had taken 17 years to sell the first 100,000. Thanks to improved technology and greater production, the large price difference when hybrids were first sold had been reduced, and Toyota had sold 170,000 hybrid cars in the past 16 months. All Lexus vehicles had hybrid options and hybrid vehicles accounted for around half of Lexus sales.

Toyota planned to sell electric cars within a year or so. Mirko noted that while they did not produce emissions while running, making them does result in emissions.

Mirko touched on kaizen – the Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement, which held there were always ways to do better. It could be applied to both professional and family life, which should support each other rather than be in conflict.

Last, but not least, Mirko talked about the karate he practices – Kyokushin – which was started by Masutatsu Oyama after the Second World War. Oyama spent many years in solitude, studying and strengthening himself, before launching his dojo (school) in the 1960s. By the 1980s, he had over 12 million students. Mirko noted that in karate one adopted a posture with a low centre of gravity, to make it difficult for the opponent to push you over. Japanese cars also had a low centre of gravity – a feature he understood better after taking up karate.

Kyokushin is a tough form of karate – only one in 200 who starts will earn a black belt. Needless to say, Mirko has achieved this.
