From The President

I am sure that all who attended our Xmas get together last Thursday did enjoy themselves.

After much early drama due to the forecast of rain we were in the process of calling the evening off when we had an offer to use the Canberra Bowling Club, and this saved the day.

The award for the best Christmas hat went to Graeme Howieson; the best legs, Warrick Howieson; and let’s not comment on the two women who ended up leaving with men that they didn’t arrive with [for the record please note that this refers to their chauffers].

Thanks again to Linda, Ross and Bill for all the effort you put in to make the evening work.

NO more outdoor functions (unless in the middle of a drought!).

This Thursday the 17th from 6.15 pm onward we have our big fund-raising evening to finish off the year. Fred Smith, diplomat, author and singer will tell us about his experiences in Afghanistan and Bougainville that were the subject of an Australian Story.

Funds raised will go to our project on the Mawonga Indigenous Protected Area in central NSW working with Bush Heritage Australia to support training of Indigenous staff in erecting fences to control wild goats and protect mallee fowl.

Also, we will have an auction of “Flights to Moruya Beach”, paintings of the Angas Downs Indigenous Protected Area by Helen Gauchat, bonsai tree and other items concluding with some surprise entertainment.

We have successfully reached our limit of 116 dinner guests but there is a waiting list. See you all there for an enjoyable evening and a great experience.

Have an enjoyable Xmas, enjoy the holiday period and we will see everyone back and ready to go at the Commonwealth Club on January 28th.

President Eric.

Membership

The 2nd Rotary Women’s Function. Looking for something different? Well, wait no more. Welcome to the next function in January 2021. We will be holding a Pasta Making Class (yes, making and eating) at my place. The class will be ably conducted by our one and only resident Italian expert, Andrea Conti. We are already planning the types of pasta dishes, fillings and sauces. I can’t wait. The date will be advised in the near future and location details provided to the lucky attendees. SPACES WILL BE LIMITED so when you see the invitation don’t hesitate with your response. P.S. there is a resident cat so if you are at all allergic to felines please wait for the next event.

Perhaps if everyone is up for a bit of fun we could schedule a game of barefoot bowls at the Canberra Bowling Club sometime over summer? Let me know if anyone is interested.

Catch up social meeting for 21st of January? Not everyone goes away and for those of us still in town may I suggest a “fish and chips” get together at the Yacht Club, Snapper on the Lake. We may need to book so I will email everyone mid January to ascertain interest and commitment.

On the Lighter Side

---A recent study found that the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year. This means, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kind of makes you proud, eh? I almost feel like a hybrid.

---The bride was escorted down the aisle, and when she reached the altar, the groom was standing there with his golf bag and clubs at his side. She asked "what are your golf clubs doing here?" He looked her right in the eye and said, "This isn't going to take all day, is it?"

----A gushy reporter told Phil Mickelson, “your name is synonymous with the game of golf." You really know your way around the course. What's your secret?" Michelson replied "The holes are numbered.”
