Hello Club Members

MERGER DISCUSSIONS AND A JOINT LUNCH AT THE ROYAL CANBERRA GOLF CLUB THIS WEEK
Six of our Members attended the Sunrise Breakfast Meeting. They had a session on interesting facts about the First World War and the guest speaker spoke about war memorials we have to world conflicts. Breakfast was a buffet at the Mercure. We will have another joint meeting with their members, this week at the Royal Canberra Golf Club. Club leaders will speak on each Club’s community activities. There will be no guest speaker.

The Board Meeting on Thursday considered the future plans for the merger. At this stage we want to have the two joint meetings and then each Club can gauge support and undertake a plebiscite in the new year.

DREAM CRICKET GALA DAY FOR DISABLED CHILDREN ON FRIDAY THE 15TH NOVEMBER
The Sunrise Club enables disabled children to have a day out trying out various cricket activities. The venue is the Canberra Boys Grammar Oval, 40 Monaro Cresent. You can come along to help out from 10.00am on Friday the 15th November. A barbeque will be available for lunch. I will try to get there by 10.00.

AGM TO BE HELD ON THE 28TH NOVEMBER STARTING AT 12.30 AT THE ROYAL CANBERRA GOLF CLUB.
You will have already received notification of the meeting AGM. Please attend on the 28th at 12.30 pm so we have a Quorum and have positions filled for our Club in the event we do not go ahead with a merger.

CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY AT RUSSELL DEW’S HOUSE ON THE 12TH DECEMBER
The Board agreed the Christmas Party will be on the Thursday the 12th December with a  barbeque starting at 5.30 for 6.00, similar to last year. The meal will consist of steak, chops, and sausages. Alcoholic beverages to be supplied by the Club. We ask couples to bring a salad or dessert. Tea and coffee will be available.

TAIYAKI STALL AT COOK
Bill and Amanda are running a taiyaki stall at the Australia Japan Spring Festival in Cook on 17th November. The stall will run from 1.30 to 3.30 pm and Bill is looking for volunteers. Please contact Bill if you would be available to help. I will attend to help out. The profits go towards the Peace Bell account that pays for commemorative services and the annual Chief Minister’s Peace prize.

TUGGERANONG ROTARY CLUB MELBOURNE CUP DINNER
I attended the Melbourne Cup dinner last Monday night (4 November) at the Vikings Club. Some people dressed up with hats and clothing. They had 5 races with 5 horses in each race with coloured and numbered dice to see who won. They even ran a mini TAB for betting on a selection of the horses. Tara Pullen attended, and everyone had a Big Night Out.

POSSIBLE FUND RASING EVENTS FOR 2025.
Ross is looking into how much we have in our Community Account and what commitments we have in the next year. If anyone has any ideas on some extra fund raising please contact me.

Yours in Rotary
Russell Dew

Canberra Rotary Peace Bell Ringing – 10 December 2024
7am Lennox Gardens, Yarralumla.

Zonta Says NO to Violence, YES to respectful relationships.

Each year the Zonta Club of Canberra Breakfast participates in the UN “16 days of activism” in honour of the lives lost to domestic violence and to highlight our community need for change and respectful relationships

In seeking to uphold the United Nations Goal No5 to `Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’, we will continue our actions by:
  • highlighting our concerns through social media,
  • lighting of the Parliamentary triangle buildings in orange for December 10th,
  • participating in the ACT Rotary consultative forum,
  • providing information about the impact of domestic violence, and
  • ringing the Peace Bell to honour those who have lost their lives in this calendar year.

We invite you to share with us and the Rotary Club of Burley Griffin in the ringing of the Peace Bell. The Bell will be struck once for each life lost, once for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, once for the children, once for the New Zealand women, and once for the men who have lost their lives through domestic violence. The Rhythm Syndicate Choir will bring their voices to the event.

While the event is free, we ask you to book through Humanitix (https://events.humanitix.com/nara-peace-bell-ringing/tickets?hxchl=hex-qrc&hxref=evt) as numbers are limited. We encourage you to gather from 6.30am for a 7am start and the event will close by 8.30.

Yours sincerely,
Kay Fredericks, Advocacy Chair ZCCB
