Hello Club Members

MEETING AT THE MERCURE HOTEL THIS WEEK
Unfortunately, the Royal Canberra Golf Club is not available this week so we are back to the Mercure. Because the meals were not very satisfactory in the past, I have nominated that we get half the meals as Fish and Chips and the other half as Bangers and Mash. So be prepared to swap the meal of your choice except for the two Vegetarians who will get special meals. The password to the car park is 7979.

MAJURA SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY CEREMONY
Astrida and myself will attend this Ceremony on Friday the 18th at 9.30 am.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
Bill has come up with 3 ideas to increase the Club Membership. One is to get Local Businesspeople in Deakin and Yarralumla to become involved for the benefit of their Business profiles.

THE CANDLE FESTIVAL TAIYAKI TENT
Bill has obtained a counter-top oven (which will act as a Pie Warmer at the Candle Festival) from Annie’s Place via Stephen and other needs have been catered for by donation or loans.

MERGER DISCUSSIONS
Stephen, Russell and Monica will meet with Peter McDermott and Alan McCullock from the Canberra Sunrise Rotary Club on Thursday the 17th at 8.45 am to discuss Merger options. We now know via the survey that we prefer to stay with our Luncheon Meetings and maintain our Charity activities. Whether we merge or just invite the Sunrise Club Members is still to be discussed and agreed by our Club.

AUDIT REVIEW REQUEST FROM THE WODEN DAYBREAK CLUB
Rhonda Owen is asking if anyone knows of an Auditor who could review the Club’s Financials as their current arrangement has lapsed. You can contact her on 0419 683 633.

Yours in Rotary

Last week’s meeting: Lift the Lid on Mental Health
Russell, Astrida, and Stephen wore hats to our Club meeting on 10 October. Club members raised $100 towards mental health programs.

Summary of Juris’ Toast
In bringing to notice an aspect of what Rotary is doing around the world, I brought to the attention of the assembled at our last club meeting (by way of delivering a toast) the incredible bravery of Rotarians in a particular war zone.

I said that I'd spent some weeks in both Israel and Lebanon, both travelling around each country and of course in Beirut and Tel Aviv, the respective capitals, some 50 years ago, and that I'd nearly fallen off my chair when I realised how long ago that was. At the time I’d needed separate passports to travel to each, as they weren’t talking to one another.

Since the region is very much in the news lately, although for particularly dreadful reasons, I thought I would check to see how Rotary is faring in both countries. I was surprised to find that both countries have a number of Rotary clubs.

In searching Lebanon, incredibly I found that the Rotary Club of Beirut Cosmopolitan is organising a 25-seater bus for its members to travel from an undisclosed location in Beirut to an undisclosed location in Byblos, a town to the north along the coast about an hour and a half's drive away, on Saturday 12 October to hold their fortnightly meeting, to discuss holding a fundraising event for community assistance!

They’re doing that in a major war zone, with massive bombs going off all around them! I think that takes extraordinary courage and a belief in the basic goodness of human beings, even amongst displays of the worst aspects of human nature.
Juris

Thank you!
Thank you to those who donated to my Oceans to Outback fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) following the inclusion of an article in last week’s News Notes.

For my part, I’ve committed to walk 96 km in October. As of today, I’ve walked 50.7 km – past the halfway mark! I record every walk on Strava and post it to Facebook. Warrick is following me on Strava and can verify the distance walked.

In addition to the walking, I’ve made a donation to the RFDS. If anyone would like to make a tax-deductible donation, please visit my fundraising page.
