It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Tony Waring’s wife, Jan, on 3 January 2024.
Tony has been a valuable long-term member of our Club. We haven't seen much of him in recent years due to his dedication to Jan’s care. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this difficult time.
Jan’s funeral will take place in the chapel of Norwood Park Crematorium, Sandford Street, Mitchell, this Friday, 12 January 2024, commencing at 10:30 am. For anyone unable to attend in person, the funeral will be livestreamed, accessible from: norwoodpark.com.au/service-streaming.
Peace Bell vandalism
Graffiti on Bell and deck
Graffiti on Bell
Graffiti elsewhere in Park
Memorial and reflection spaces across Lennox Gardens, including the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell, were covered with graffiti, most likely on New Year’s Eve.
The vandalism also affected the pagoda, Spanish and Israeli memorials, a memorial to murdered Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, and other spaces have been covered with offensive messages. Many relate to the current Gaza conflict, but others use obscenities, suggest violence towards police and that capitalism kills.
Thanks to prompt action from the ACT Government (via its City Services) all the monuments within Lennox Gardens have now been cleaned, including the Peace Bell and its deck.
The first stage of the clean-up
Thanks to Michael Rabey for the information, photos, and reporting the vandalism to the police.
