Next meeting
On Thursday, 7 December, we meet at the Commonwealth Club and will hear from Chris Edwards, the Event Director of the Aussie Peace Walk, an annual, two-day walking event that attracts international visitors (from 12 other countries earlier this year) and raises funds ($23,612 in 2023) for Rotary charities. Come, hear, be inspired, and register for the next Aussie Peace Walk (

No to Violence against Women Peace Bell ringing: Sunday, 10 December
Each year Zonta International holds a worldwide campaign Zonta Says No to violence against women and children. The 16-day Zonta Say No campaign is linked to the United Nations Goal No 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The campaign begins on 25 November (the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and culminates on 10 December (the UN International Human Rights Day). During this period, the Zonta Club of Canberra Breakfast (ZCCB) raises awareness across the ACT.
To convey the scale of this problem, the ZCCB will be releasing social media posts highlighting the number of women and children who have died through family and domestic violence this year. ZCCB will display orange lady silhouettes with Say No to Violence in the Civic Library from 25 November to 10 December and provide information about the impact of family and domestic violence on women and girls.
The final Zonta Says No activity is a joint ZCCB and Rotary Canberra Burley Griffin event: the ringing of the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell on the morning of 10 December 2023. Participants at the event ring the bell and say the first name and age of each woman who has died from family and domestic violence over the last year. We also ring the peace bell once for all the children, once for all Aboriginal women, once for all the men and once for all New Zealanders who have died through family and domestic violence. As of 6 October, 38 women have died as a result of family and domestic violence across Australia and countless others have been affected.
All are welcome to attend the Bell ringing to help acknowledge those who have died through family and domestic violence in 2023.
