Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin News Notes 27th July 2026
Welcome back President Neil and Astrida.
Neil returned to our meeting feeling a bit jet-lagged but enthusiastic about his experiences over the last few weeks. He hiked hundreds of kilometres, and tnthused about his experiences in Malta. He has much to tell and we wait with anticipation for his next report.
Astrida has returned from her adventures in Western Australia. Many stories are in the pipeline.
We also welcomed John's wife Zairel and Chandra as guests as well. As expected, the cold weather was a common topic of discussion! Chandra is for India and is a long time friend of Stephen Macmillan.
Last Week:
From the meeting on 23rd July
We welcomed Madeline, Dakota and Thomas from Queanbeyan High School last week. They presented their indigenous students support programme which is focussed on taking about 8 - 18 young aboriginal students each week to a course at Birrigai camp, where they become involved a variety of training and career support programmes, and activities centred on bush skills and caring for country. The programme is supported by the teachers who see a direct relationship between this course and students attendance at regular high school courses and a desire by the students to make long term commitments to further training and education.
We were shocked to learn that the NSW government had cut back funding and caused at the programme to contract to half its usual size, notwithstanding its relatively small budget.
We discussed it at length, and feel it could be a programme we could support.
Watch this space!
