BARBEQUE AT RUSSELL DEW’S HOUSE ON THURSDAY THE 12TH OF DECEMBER.
I have asked Eric to be the King of the Barbeque and we will have steaks, sausages, chops and chicken drumsticks. We are asking for those who can to bring either a salad or a desert. I will ask for who can bring either of these foods at our meeting on Thursday. Beer and wine will be available and the club is paying for the meal. If you are not at our meeting on Thursday could you email me that you are coming.

CHRISTMAS GIFT WRAPPING AT WESTFIELD WODEN
Woden Westfield is creating a desk with Christmas gift wrapping paper/ribbon, and an Eftpos Machine. They are setting this up to be a fundraising activity for local charities and we have been asked whether we would like to staff the desk in the days before Christmas. Small parcels are charged at $2.00 and large parcels are charged $5.00. The full proceeds would go back to our Club.

I am getting details from Westfield of how many we would need staff a table. We have offers to help from Russell and Jessica Howieson.

PEACE POLE CEREMONY AT THE MAJURA PRIMARY SCHOOL
Stephen and I attended the Majura School for their Peace Ceremony on Wednesday the 27th November at 9.30. I read out the Peace Message from the Secretary General Antonio Guterres and students read out the Poem from Loa Tze.

In December we will attend the Majura Primary School Graduation Ceremony to present the annual Rotary Citizenship Award.

TRIVIA NIGHT AT THE IRISH CLUB WESTON ON THE 27TH NOVEMBER
I went to the Trivia night on the Nusa Tangara Association Table and $4000 was raised for victims of the recent Volcanic eruption which caused a major evacuation of people from the region.

SUNRISE COFFEE MORNING AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIA ON THE 27TH NOVEMBER.
Juris and myself went to the Coffee morning with the Sunrise Club at the Museum of Australia. Both Members and Friends of the Club attended. This concept is something we may adopt for our Club in the future.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ACTION DAY ON THE 29TH NOVEMBER
On Friday the 29th Michael and I attended the Rotary Day of Action Against Domestic Violence held at the Nara Peace Park starting at 9.00. DG Rob Uhl spoke on behalf of the District.

PEACE FELLOWS VISIT TO CANBERRA FROM 21-24 JUNE 2025.
The visit of the Peace Fellows will require up to ten host families to cover accommodation, one meal out on the Sunday, breakfasts in the morning and a pick up and drop off at the start and finish of their visit. The organiser has asked for volunteers and myself, Warrick, Ross and Juris have indicated that would offer accommodation on a tentative basis at this stage. We have informed the organiser that we would participate.

UPDATE ON THE HAY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS.
Anne McNally, the Careers Advisor provided Bill with an update on the Scholarship winners and their progress in the education. All the scholarship holders achieved and 80/90% attendance record. All the Year Twelve recipients have moved onto either a professional career or to further education. The students in other years have used their Scholarship funds wisely on excursions, school uniforms, and books. Many of the recipients have participated in school sports programs and some have attended courses at the Hay TAFE.

Canberra Rotary Peace Bell Ringing, 10 December 2024
7am Lennox Gardens, Yarralumla.

Zonta Says NO to Violence, YES to respectful relationships.

Each year the Zonta Club of Canberra Breakfast participates in the UN “16 days of activism” in honour of the lives lost to domestic violence and to highlight our community need for change and respectful relationships

In seeking to uphold the United Nations Goal No5 to `Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’, we will continue our actions by:
  • highlighting our concerns through social media,
  • lighting of the Parliamentary triangle buildings in orange for December 10th,
  • participating in the ACT Rotary consultative forum,
  • providing information about the impact of domestic violence, and
  • ringing the Peace Bell to honour those who have lost their lives in this calendar year.

We invite you to share with us and the Rotary Club of Burley Griffin in the ringing of the Peace Bell. The Bell will be struck once for each life lost, once for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, once for the children, once for the New Zealand women, and once for the men who have lost their lives through domestic violence. The Rhythm Syndicate Choir will bring their voices to the event.

While the event is free, we ask you to book through Humanitix (https://events.humanitix.com/nara-peace-bell-ringing/tickets?hxchl=hex-qrc&hxref=evt) as numbers are limited. We encourage you to gather from 6.30am for a 7am start and the event will close by 8.30.

Yours sincerely,
Kay Fredericks, Advocacy Chair ZCCB

Peace Bell School Tour advertisement
Thanks to those Members who pledged an annual contribution to pay for an advertisement for Peace Bell tours for visiting school students in the magazine sent to each school: here’s what’s being published.

NTA Trivia a great success
Many thanks to all those that supported the NTA’s Trivia Extravaganza on Wednesday night. The perfect outcome - an evening of fun with friends and the raising of much needed funds to help the poor farming communities of eastern Indonesia.

Yet again Therese and Andrew threw some challenging questions at us from a range of topics. We attracted 100 participants across 12 tables and raised a fabulous $4100.

This will help make a big difference for those living in poverty. We are currently providing emergency food, masks and water filters to those impacted by the recent volcanic eruptions in Flores. We are still assessing the situation and negotiating with other organisations but our expectation is that these funds will help boost our assistance for these people.

NTA would like to thank all those that supported the evening. We would particularly like to thank Therese and Andrew, the Canberra Irish Club that provided the venue and our prize donors – especially GreenskinWine https://greenskinwine.com/ and Officeworks Tuggeranong.

Thank you so much for your support.
