From the President (23 Nov 2020)

AGM: In just two weeks (Dec. 3rd) we will be holding our AGM at which time the Board for 2021/22 will be elected. However, at this stage we do not have nominations for President or Secretary. The Club can not function without these positions being filled, so I ask that you give serious consideration to this situation and I hope we can get nominations from somebody.

Our Next Meeting (Thursday, Nov. 26th): Another reminder that it will be at the Commonwealth Club and NOT a ZOOM meeting.

Community Services: Christmas Gift Collection

Have a look at some of the donations received thus far from members for the St John’s Christmas Present and Hamper Appeal.

Thank you to Linda for collecting them. There is still plenty of room on the lounge for additional items. A reminder that the cut-off date is 3 December 2020.

The Peace Bell and Peace Poles

A big thank you to Juris for inviting us to attend the Latvian National Day Commemoration at the Peace Bell last Saturday. It was very, very warm and all credit to the dancers who did a fabulous job.

Human Rights Day on the 10th December the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell will be rung to recognise all women killed through domestic violence in Australia this year. This ceremony will begin early at 7am organised by the Canberra Zonta Breakfast Club. Please add this date to your diary and hopefully attend on the day. This is one of the most moving events of the year at the Peace Bell. Partners are also welcome to also attend.

Last week 3 more Peace Poles were ordered for Canberra Schools. Canberra Sunrise have donated a pole for Red Hill Primary, Weston Creek to Forrest Primary School and Canberra Burley Griffin to Majura Primary School. We have now seen 60 Peace Poles distributed with another 50 under consideration.

Membership News

How many of you watched the webinar by Mark Huddleston included in last week’s newsletter? There is certainly some food for thought contained in the presentation. See below for some of the questions that he proposes we ask ourselves and our club, some of which were raised by members in our recent Membership Presentation to the club.

The membership Committee has Tony Brickwood and Keith Gray working on an updated Club Brochure. Sharon is liaising with Mikkel Litonjua from Lexus to get us up on their website in the Community Partnerships and Sponsorships section. Robert Laine is toiling valiantly away on our detailed program and strategic plan.

Speaking of promotions, see the effective promotion by the Zonta Club. This banner was in the main entry foyer of Palace Electric Cinemas on a weekend, presumably seen by hundreds of attendees over the weekend. How good is that?

Our Past Meeting (Nov. 19th)

For our talk at Rotary last Thursday 19 Nov, we learned more about Stirling

Park and the Westlake settlement from Tony Marple from the National Trust.

He is also President of the Rotary Club of Weston Creek. He told us how as

Canberra developed in the 1920s, Stirling Park, then known as "Westlake,"

was the site of workers cottages. These cottages were all removed by 1965,

but some evidence of these former dwellings remains, along with interpretive

signage.

On the Lighter Side

Saying of the week:

I found the best way to give advice to children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it.”

Harry Truman.

Golf:

Can be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good stiff drink.

A ' gimme ' can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers ... neither of whom can putt very well.

No matter how badly you play, it's always possible to get worse.

The best wood in most amateurs bags is the pencil.

Golf is like a marriage, if you take yourself too seriously it won't work, and both are expensive.

If your best shots are the practice swing and the 'gimme putt' you might wish to consider this game.
